How many of you lost the ability to rec diaries and/or rate comments?

Just out of curiousity, how many of you just lost your ability to rec diaries and rate comments?  I'm really curious whether this was some sort of reaction against Obama supporters (prompted, perhaps, by the presence of something like 4 pro-Obama/unity diaries this past weekend).

I'm not trying to start any conspiracy theories, but I would be pretty turned off if that's the way Jerome and company want to run this site.  Does it really matter?  Not really, I suppose, but I would lose a lot of respect for the proprietors of the site.

You could really clear this up for me by explaining that it was a technical difficulty or even what it is that I and so many others recently did wrong, Jerome, Todd, or Jonathan.  And if this is some childish way of disempowering Obama supporters or trying to get us to leave, fine, message received loud and clear.  Good luck staying relevant if you stifle people who don't agree with you.

UPDATE: Rec this diary! Haha, just kidding

Doesn't that go blatantly against the spirit of this place? My Direct Democracy?  Seriously?

I really hope that one of those big three can tell us what's going on (and if I'm/we're overreacting, of course). I can certainly understand that it's his site and that he can do with it as he's sees fit, but I would have imagined integrity would count for something.

I'm Speaking Out For Jerome Here (2.00 / 1)

Over the weekend I told Jerome:

"Hey Jerome,
You know what?
You're totally full of shit, saying that 'the hatred of Clintons runs deep among Obama supporters'"
I said some other stuff too, involving 'poo poo', kaka, and some unsolicited advice about how he could be a better moderator of a progressive blog.

That was in a diary of Jerome's entitled "On The VP"

And to Jerome's credit, he didn't zap me off this site or punish me in any way. I was very impressed by Jerome's tolerance of my 'poo-poo' comments, especially when I got about 20 mojos from others.

I've read several other complaints from Obama supporters saying they were unfairly censored here at MyDD. But I've gotta say that I was allowed to express my indignation against Jerome here, and he took it like a true, Democratic Mensch.
I was impressed!

No big whup.  If Jerome wants his reputation to suffer as a result of his determination to ensure that only nutcase Clinton-partisan diaries make the rec list, it's his funeral.

When it comes down to it, MyDD is only one of a zillion stinkin' blogs, and the quality of its reputation (and its participants) rises and falls along with the reputation of its proprietor.  For now, anyway, Jerome has a couple of quality frontpagers to fill in the sanity gap.

DailyKos has grown into what it is because of Markos Moulitsas' reputation for fairness and sanity.

Re: Because you zero-rated Jerome. (2.00 / 1)

regardless of what the place is called, this site, just like daily kos, is not a democracy; the sites are owned by Jerome and Markos.  Private property - it's the "American Way".  I own my lawn.  I can put a bench out on the corner, and I can let some people sit on it and I can chase other people away, b/c it's mine.  Respect my lawn and you can sit on my bench.  Throw your litter on my lawn and I can chase you away - and it's my definition of "litter" not yours.  That's what ownership means.

The options?  Either don't litter, or go buy your own lawn.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever been troll rated, either (I'm not aware of it, at any rate).

Re: How many of you lost the ability to rec diarie (2.00 / 2)

Almost always, we let people back in when we can. Look, the reality is that MyDD has never had to ban people from its threads for pretty much the whole time its been live, but have resorted to it in order to not lose its strength of tolerance of opinion.

When people can't post without making personal attacks are cursing like a tourette syndrome addict, or write and promote the meaningless diaries that call out other users, or troll rate for reasons outside the guidelines, they lose privileges. I don't care about candidate attacks, as long as they are not racist/sexist, or that type of inflammatory barrage.

I agree (none / 0)

but you have access to my post history, and I have never done any of the things you list.  I have sent e-mails to you and Todd simply asking why my ability was restricted twice and no one has ever responded.  I would have no problem with a restricted account if I had any idea why, other than supporting Sen. Obama in a respectful manner.

I used a bad word (none / 0)

But that's hardly Tourettic.  Apparently what led to my double super secret probation was objecting (by calling the diarist a name) to a three-line candidate insult diary w/video.  I still have yet to see what that diary contributes to the ostensible politics of this site, or even how it is remotely squared with those politics.

Re: I used a bad word (none / 0)

It's not that difficult to criticize a diary without calling the diarist a name. That is a direct violation of the rules, so what did you expect?

ALOT of people attacked Jerome by name for this smear 2 line diary (which is a violation of the rules itself)

ALot of CLinton Supporters attacked him too and he had the gaul to lie and say this in his update:

Update [2008-5-13 19:15:46 by Jerome Armstrong]: Heh, Obama supporters are offended by the comparison of Obama's preening for the media with Bush's preening for the media. Certainly Obama's agenda will be different that Bush's, thank goodness, but in this regard, it is what it is I'm afraid.

I have no idea what you are talking about and I was not responding to you. I don't care about your whine-fest about Jerome, I was simply trying to point out to that particular poster that their admitted name-calling is probably what caused them trouble.

Why,  how can one abuse their rec privledges?

Re: How many of you lost the ability to rec? (none / 0)

it doesn't seem to be evenhanded about which users are being targeted... I continue to see some extreme behavior (from certain users) that goes unchecked.

I'm not claiming sainthood or anything... It's frustrating though, and the quality of my posts might be suffering. I just wish I knew what I did wrong. And I'd like to know when - if ever - will I be off probation?

I guess I'd rather be banned for a few days, like some of the "other culprits", then be back with my full abilities rather than to be stuck in purgatory for an unknown length of time.

Obama supporter
Never gave a TR
Never Used profantiy
Never insulted either canidate
Never insutlted another poster

I did make the mistake of reccomending the diary that was taken down then put back up top in the Rec list.

I guess I have poor taste?

Re: How many of you lost the ability to rec diarie (none / 0)

I've lost it, though i can still view hidden comments (which i believe would make me a TU, yet I can't rate, kind of ironic).

Don't care too much, but I'm not sure why it was taken away, I only get TR'd by the same three or four people (who just disagree with my comment or claim that I deserve a TR because I'm being too realistic and not buying that Clinton still has a chance), and have only given out a few TR in my time here.

I just hope that all of us who have gotten this taken away can have it back when the primaries are over. Seems reasonable.

I think those are the same 3 or 4 people who hide rate everyone.  I try to uprate when I can, although recently they've taking to HRing and TRing me, so we'll see how long that lasts.

Same with me. I can read hidden comments, but can't rate or rec. I have received very few TR's. I do not feel I have ever engaged in ratings abuse or flaming. It seems completely arbitrary...if you lean slightly to the left... off with your head!!!

Yep, had ability to rate and rec diaries taken away months ago. No explanation why, not did I ever get into fights with people here. It's very strange!!

Perhaps I am caustic and just don't know it.  Can someone take a look at my post history and give me some candid feedback if they think any of my post have ever crossed any of the lines Jerome mentions.  I'm serious, perhaps I did and just don't recongnize how a post reads.

Thanks in advance,

I lost my ability, and I'm fairly certain I haven't broken any rules. I sent a message to one of the admins weeks ago asking for an explanation, but never heard back.

Re: How many of you lost the ability to rec diarie (none / 0)

See they NEED your hits and comments to get revenue from those spiffy ads but they have to keep they residnets in the REC list happy.

Last week, like Thursday, the rec list was decimated by non-residents.

There were people that got mad and said they would leave, because the prohillary diaries were gone.

I've never lost my ability to rate or write. (none / 0)

I did get warned once, the day before the infamous purge where a bunch of the worst here were expunged and then most allowed to come back and continue, and I actually left the site at that point for two weeks, feeling that I was not welcome, but since coming back I've had no problems.

I do try though to be civil. I don't use profanity. I dole out troll and hide ratings very judiciously, and spread mucho mojo for good posters and diarists. I don't know. So far it works for me.

I've also found that on two recent occasion when I reported troll diaries to the powers that be (along with dozens of others I assume) those members were banned, and I do find that encouraging.

I think Obama supporters need to take this site for what it is. It's way biased in one direction, and you don't get as much leeway as a Clinton supporter. That's just the way it is. As someone suggested, maybe writing to the admins will help. Build up that mojo, and play nice.

Plain and Simple (none / 0)

This is how you get "Restricted" on MYDD

The main thing is people who serially REC threads that KEEP the Clinton Love diaries from the rec list are restricted.
Why would Jerome remove REC abilities and not just TR?

The first sweep Jerome did was when people RECed Bob Johnson's thread  (Also Bob WAS banned).

Last night he wrote a thread saying Obama reminded him of Bush.
The whole site attacked him, and he spun it as just obama supporters.

Whatever, he can live in the same reality McCaulife is and not realize what the whole net thinks of this site. (just look at the cross postings of his "Obama is Bush" diaries)

I think the idea of Direct Democracy in it's purest form is a joke, but to call this site that has to be the most ridiculous political Irony I have ever witnessed.

And those who purport Direct Democracy over Representative Democracy should be offended.

Re: Plain and Simple (none / 0)

To further this I would like to ask Jerome directly, whether he responds or not.

Why would my Rec privileges get taken away,  I know I am guilty of Zero rating what I thought was an ignorant comment by one the only defenders you had yesterday in your hit job diary.

If you look at my record I have only troll rated quite egregious comments, generally those that attack and smear good democrats.
I zero rated ONE person, and it was Pericles, and that thing was Zero rated in almost every comment it posted.

So, Jerome,  how does my ability to REC a good diary a threat to this site?
Why did I lose it.

Thank you.

For the record (none / 0)

This was the latest thread Jerome did a MyDD sweep.

This time he went after Obama supporters that attacked him for his best Diary ever:
http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/13/1842 51/009
http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/13/1842 51/009
http://www.mydd.com/story/2008/5/13/1842 51/009

He did not ban or restrict any of the many Hillary supporters who lambasted this diary.
Some even said they were leaving the site.

Which makes his Terry McCaulife update just hillarious since 95% of people thought the diary was pure garbage, just read the comments, then read his update:

Update [2008-5-13 19:15:46 by Jerome Armstrong]: Heh, Obama supporters are offended by the comparison of Obama's preening for the media with Bush's preening for the media. Certainly Obama's agenda will be different that Bush's, thank goodness, but in this regard, it is what it is I'm afraid.

I hope people don't leave this site, I know it has a very top down management, and as a oppresive regime people are oppresed here with Zero due process or any explanations.
